The banded flier stands between her adopted chick and the demon after them both, her hackles raised.
"Foolish little warrior," it growls, "give her to me and I'll let you live."
"How about no? We both know you're a liar."
She pulls the little one closer to her side, speaking in a whisper.
"Go find one of my mates. Stay with her til I come back."
"Where are you going?" whimpers the chick in alarm.
"That's up to that (censored) above us. Ten-to-one I'm going to be thrown into yet another dimension." She gives the child a soft nudge, and the chick flees out the side entrance. The flier hides her escape by flashing her boldly-marked primari
